OUR COMMUNITY
York Avenue Preschool creates a community by involving its parents in the learning that occurs each day. Our goal is to have a bridge from home to school and back. Parents are in constant communication with their child's teachers: they are electronically informed about classroom activities and any highlights on a daily basis; curriculum is sent home monthly, encouraging parents to follow along with their child's education; and parents are regularly welcomed into the classrooms to assist with special projects or lessons, to celebrate the many holidays throughout the year and of course, to read to the children.
OUR PARENT ASSOCIATION
Outside of the classrooms, York Avenue Preschool fosters friendships between families through its vibrant Parents' Association (PA). The PA organizes a variety of wonderful events throughout the year in the spirit of community building, including Back to School Coffees, Class Cocktail Parties, a Book Fair, the annual Benefit and Auction, a Parent Lecture Series, an Author Reading Day in the classrooms and a spring Welcome Reception for all incoming parents. The PA also orchestrates several school-wide community outreach projects, namely a Thanksgiving food drive, a Holiday Toy Drive and a January clothing and toy collection for a local non-profit organization. Other ongoing PA projects include the maintenance of the School Library, the publication of our School Newsletter and the creation of both the Class Placemats and School Memory Book.
Monies raised by the PA are used to enrich the preschool experience of York Avenue students by supporting both the curriculum and our teachers. Ongoing initiatives sponsored by the PA include the funding of specialty teachers (the Yoga/Movement teacher, the Living Science program and the school Librarian), providing assistance to the faculty for advanced education, supplementing health insurance for the assistant teachers and “granting wishes” for each classroom which includes educational tools to engage our children." |
